Today, we pause to honour the incredible courage, resilience, and sacrifice of those who served. Their bravery has gifted us the freedoms we enjoy every day, including the opportunity to work, build, and create a future with purpose.
As we celebrate Women in Trades Month, meet Jersey, a second-year plumber and gasfitter.
Her passion for the trades was sparked in high school, where she dabbled in a variety of different trades. She is thankful for the support of her crews who have supported her and made the workplace welcoming and inclusive. She sees shifts on the jobsite becoming a friendlier environment for women in trades and looks forward to continued change.
Jersey comes from a family of tradespeople, with her grandfather serving as the Dean of St. Lawerence College trades school and founder of the Skilled Trades Competition. Her father and brother are also in the trades! Her story proves there’s a place for everyone in this thriving industry.

Sean Whitehead (@seann.w), a pipe welder with UA Local 46 & A. Wright Mechanical, has spent the past 14 months working on the Waste Energy Transfer system at Toronto Western Hospital… A $794 million project.
This innovative project extracts thermal energy from the city's sewage system, preheating glycol to 50°C with heat exchangers, before bringing it to full temperature using steam for the hospital's heating. 🌡️
Projects like these highlight how unionized trades people are truly at the forefront of shaping our communities. This weekend, we celebrate #NationalFatherDaughterDay, and what better way than to showcase one of our own from @ualocal401 in Kingston: Sam and Mary, a father-daughter duo keeping the family tradition alive in the pipe trades.
Sam, a seasoned welder turned instructor, was caught off guard when Mary showed interest in following his path, but he's been her biggest supporter every step of the way. 👏
Now a plumbing apprentice, Mary is eager to expand her skills, with welding next on her list. 🔥
As the third generation in the trades, Mary isn’t just upholding tradition—she’s shaping her own. Whether she’s getting her hands dirty on-site or embracing her feminine side off the clock, she’s showing that the trades aren’t defined by gender. ‘I can do the job just like anyone else,’ she says.
Here’s to fathers and daughters building the future, side by side.

Meet Hayley, a skilled steam/pipe fitter at @VollmerInc, a multi-trade contractor based in Windsor, serving Ontario-wide. 👩🏭
In her early twenties, Hayley chose not to follow a desk-bound path and enrolled at BCIT, where she explored various piping trades. Now, with experience both in the shop and in the field, she shares, “Hands down, my favourite part is working in the fab shop. I love the pace and the opportunity to work with a skilled welder, fabricating piping systems and building off spool drawings.”
Even though she’s just starting her career, Hayley believes choosing this path was “one of the best decisions I have ever made.”

The trades came naturally to Lexi, who fell in love with the field during high school. After receiving pushback that the trades, might not be the spot “for a girl”, that emboldened her to pursue it even more 💪.
Being able to see the results of her work gives her satisfaction in her job. Reflecting on how to make things better and continually improving are what she enjoys most as part of her day-to-day. The #UALocal401 has helped prep Lexi for her career and fosters a supportive learning environment.

@FanshaweCollege is overhauling its existing heating and cooling systems into a central Campus Energy Centre. This is a five-year project and @EllisDonCorp and @Modern.Niagara are leading the way, starting with a new chiller centre.
After operating off an aging, decentralized system nearing the end of its lifecycle, this new system, complete with specialized pre-insulated pipe, will not only provide a more reliable environment for students to learn in but is a greener solution – reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing capacity, and lowering maintenance and operating costs. Sounds like a win-win to us!
This is just the beginning of the work – we will be sure to share updates as this comes to life.

Meet Adam Carpenter, owner of #RFContracting and a board member of the #MCAO. 👀
Adam’s path to the trades wasn’t exactly the usual route. He started in the corporate world as an accountant and controller for a commercial real estate firm. But when the job posed the possibility of relocating him and his family away from Sault Ste. Marie, he took a leap of faith, taking control of RF Contracting and putting his business smarts to work in his hometown.
Adam’s passion for the future of the pipe trades is clear. He’s excited about how the industry is evolving with technology and the growing need for skills like people management. He sees this as an opportunity for more people with diverse backgrounds to find their place and succeed in the trades.
He’s also a huge advocate for Sault Ste. Marie, saying, “There’s no better place to stay, live, and play.” If you’re curious about what the Soo has to offer, reach out to UA Local 800, MCA Sault Ste Marie or RF Contraction to learn more.
Have you thought about how clean water is delivered to our campgrounds?
Take the Parks Canada water treatment plant in Lake Superior Provincial Park, completed by #RFContracting, for example.
This project involved the installation of complex piping systems and advanced filtration technology to ensure that well water meets rigorous safety standards. From the intricacies of laying underground pipelines to the precision of installing filtration units, every detail is meticulously handled to provide clean, reliable water for park fountains, campsites, and more.
And let’s be honest — working in a provincial park isn’t too shabby, either. 🌲💧

Meet Kris Ali Trotman—a seasoned journeyman steamfitter with @UA_Local46 in Toronto since 2014, whose journey from journalism and warehousing to the trades exemplifies the transformative potential of new beginnings.
Kris's venture into the construction realm wasn't conventional; it started with a twist of fate and a curiosity to explore working with his hands. Through the @cobthammerheads Program, a two-month crash course in various trades, he found his calling in #steamfitting—a craft that ignited his passion and instilled a profound sense of pride in his craftsmanship.
From his experience beginning as an apprentice to his ongoing pursuit of a dual ticket for basic welding, Kris's odyssey has been marked by perpetual growth and evolution. His repertoire boasts handling colossal projects like @thewell_to in Toronto and the revamping of the Darlington power plant—which came to him through a travel card (you can try out different local unions!)
For those contemplating a plunge into the trades, Kris has some pearls of wisdom: "Show them the opportunities and the fact that you don’t need to drain your wallet on education. It's tough, but it builds character, boosts your wallet, and fuels your ambition." His journey epitomizes the boundless possibilities and transformative potential inherent in the trades—a journey of growth, opportunity, and endless exploration.
With every person we meet, it’s inspiring to hear that no paths are the same… Some are very different, but every person is happy to have ended up at the #UA!
Despite initially exploring various paths, Alanna's heart was always drawn to the trades. It wasn't until she found herself in a fabrication shop just a stone's throw from home that her journey truly began. That fateful decision to delve into welding—a spur-of-the-moment choice on her first day at work—set her on a path of discovery and fulfillment she never imagined.
Now, as @UA.Canada ’s Special Representative for Diversity, Youth & Indigenous Relations, Alanna's passion for the trades burns brighter than ever. From her humble beginnings to her current role, she's seen firsthand the transformative power of union solidarity and the boundless opportunities the trades offer.
Guided by her grandmother's timeless wisdom—"how will you know if you never try?"— @AlannaMarklund has fearlessly embraced every opportunity that came her way. From wielding a torch to teaching others and now advocating for diversity and inclusion, she's a shining example of the limitless possibilities the trades offer.
Whether you're considering a career in welding or advocating for change, Alanna's journey reminds us that the trades offer a path to purpose, fulfillment, and making a real difference in the world.

It’s not every day a helicopter becomes an essential part of the operation! 🚁
On-site in London, a helicopter was used by MCAO member contractor @cjsexpressltd to help lift 32 MUA heating and cooling units and 2,000 feet of pipe on to the roof of this warehouse. Traditionally a process that takes days with a crane, utilizing a helicopter completes the job in a matter of hours, rain or shine!
Once on the roof, pipefitters will pipe all the gas lines to the units and throughout the warehouse. This work is essential to ensuring fresh air is brought into the building from outside. These units are also key to ensuring energy efficiency by managing the temperature of incoming air, reducing interference with existing climate controls.
This job exemplifies how mechanical contractors are adapting their practices to work efficiently and safely, all while keeping their work on schedule. ⏰

Abby’s journey into the trades started right out of high school when she discovered her love for metalworking and welding. Despite facing some skepticism along the way, Abby’s determination never wavered. With grit and perseverance, she joined the union and hasn’t looked back since.
Nowadays, you’ll find Abby on-site at Toronto Western Hospital, where she’s hanging pipe for the glycol supply and return in the parking garage. It’s not her first rodeo—Abby’s worked on everything from Enwave projects to smaller-scale endeavours, each one adding to her growing skill set and confidence.

You might recognize this face, especially if you were on the #WestPark team. 👇
Meet Josh – he’s a 16-year vet and the go-to guy on the West Park Hospital site. Starting his journey as a plumber, Josh found his niche in medical gas systems, thanks to specialized and paid-for training through his #union. Seen here, Josh and his team expertly installed one of the mechanical systems that define the hospital.
The systems utilize Zephyr pumps that pump oxygen through 1,200 feet of pipe within the hospital! This crucial system ensures the medical beds have the flow of med gas that they need.
It's a complicated job, but that’s why Josh is in med gas - he loves the challenge of the work, and it helps that it's a clean job too! He gives back to the union that taught him, now teaching the program himself so others can continue to deliver on these specialized jobs. 🤝
“A worker is only as good as their tools.”
Having the right tools needed to complete the job makes a difference. This threading machine is an essential tool for a pipefitter, here at #WestPark, ensures connecting pipes are secure and well-threaded. Here’s why that matters:
💧Prevent leaks: A well-sealed pipe means no leaks and no leaks means an efficient system.
⏳ Performance: Done well, you can ensure longevity and a system that will stand the day-to-day rigors of use.
When the threading is right, the system can operate how it was intended to, ensuring optimal flow of fluids or gases and a high performing system.
What are some other Tools of the Trades you can’t live without? 🤔

During Black History Month, we honour the history, culture, and invaluable contributions of Black Canadians who've shaped our nation’s identity✊🏽.
In the trades, we pay homage to the extraordinary Black trade unionist trailblazers who paved the way for positive change in our industry: from Bromley Armstrong who fought for the development of anti-racist legislation in Ontario, to Stanley G. Grizzle who fought for the rights of Black Canadians as the first Black Citizen Court judge, to Fred Upshaw who was the first Black leader of a major Canadian trade union and won wage increases and human rights language in contracts...to our very own Roodney Clarke, UA Local 46’s first Black president and business representative🛠️. The list goes on.
As we reflect on the past, we understand the challenges the industry still faces in the present. In the unionized pipe trades, we stand united and are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where every tradesperson can thrive. We ask our locals across Ontario to recognize and celebrate Black members' incredible contributions to the pipe trades, not just in February, but each day of the year.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge project isn't just about crossing borders 🇨🇦 🇺🇸, it's about improving the community, creating jobs, and setting new standards in environmental sustainability🌿. That’s why the project earned this year’s inaugural National Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Award from the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships for its outstanding commitment to sustainability and community prosperity in the Windsor-Detroit region.
The #Vollmer team in Windsor is vital in bringing this monumental project to life, intricately installing the mechanical systems for all the buildings at the Canadian Port of Entry. From customs and administration to operations, inspections, and tolls – their pipe tradespeople have every corner covered, ensuring the plumbing, drainage, hydronic, heating and cooling, natural gas, storm, ventilation, and compressed air systems are seamlessly integrated. These systems serve everything from the animal inspection area🐄 to the x-ray inspection building🚚. The Vollmer team even took seismic grading into account, ensuring all mechanical systems are prepared for any eventuality.
But what truly sets this project apart? It's not just the scale, it's the commitment to sustainability. Each building is LEED Silver certified, thanks to energy-efficient systems and a focus on hydronic piping for efficient energy transport. The project’s energy centre utilizes energy-efficient boilers and chillers, forming a campus-wide heating and cooling system that connects all buildings via an underground hydronic piping network.
Congrats Vollmer! Here's to building not just a Port of Entry, but a sustainable future. 🤝

Meet Dave, the skilled plumber originally from Galloway, Ireland 🇮🇪! Straight out of high school, Dave embarked on a plumbing journey that led him to the Ontario Pipe Trades in Canada.
After six years in the non-union world, he was eager to switch to the benefits of union life – as a member of @ua_local46 he enjoys a four-day work week (something not offered in all locals), a robust pension, better pay, and the chance to dive into more complex, rewarding projects. Dave was a key part of the @modern.niagara team who helped bring The Well to life (… go check out our previous posts to see how monumental that project is 😏)!
What’s his favourite part of the job? The easy-going, hands-on work, freedom to explore, and ability to learn with an amazing team.
@thewell_to is ready for whatever winter throws its way❄️
Say goodbye to scary slips and dirty slush - the pipe tradespeople of @modern.niagara installed the largest snow melt system in Canada (second only to Toronto Pearson Airport), ensuring every path is clear from ice and snow.
This not only eliminates the need to use environmentally harmful salt around this 8-acre community, but also reduces work for the businesses located within by preventing snow and salt from being dragged around.
And that’s just the beginning. The Modern Niagara team also intricately crafted the Well’s mesmerizing glass canopy with electric heating and 60 rainwater lines to ensure nothing ever obstructs this architectural gem.
So, the next time you take a winter stroll through this stunning mixed-use development… give a silent props 🤜 🤛 to the pipe tradespeople from @ua_local46 who helped make it so enjoyable!

Meet Dave, the heart and soul behind #LekterIndustrialServices🛠️
Starting as a plumber in '79, Dave's journey from apprentice to president is a testament to his drive and dedication. He has a serious love for the pipe trades, getting every credential possible from plumbing and steamfitting to gasfitting and backflow prevention. This passion led him to establish Lekter in '88, and since then, he's transformed it from a small venture to a hundred-strong team working on major ICI projects throughout the region🏗️.
A proud union member from day one, Dave's commitment to excellence led him to unionize his business as well, allowing access to a highly skilled workforce a phone call away👷♂️.
For Dave, every day is a new challenge, and he thrives on turning the impossible into reality with his team. Beyond his business success, Dave's decades of industry service (including his presidency at the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada) culminated in a well-deserved lifetime achievement award this past fall.
Here's to Dave, a true industry legend with a true love for the mechanical industry!

Raising a glass to @TheWell_To🥂, and the opening of this milestone project! This groundbreaking mixed-use development in #Toronto redefines city living and sets a new standard for community placemaking.
A culmination of years of hard work and dedication, we want to shout out the pipe tradespeople of @modern.niagara who were vital in bringing this 8 acres of retail, office and residential space to life. From the depths of the lower floors to the dizzying heights of the highest level, they brought expertise and innovation to every corner of the project.
The team not only installed all of the plumbing, heating, hydronics and underground piping – but ensured the project uses sustainable energy practices and collaborated with architects to bring together functionality and design seamlessly. That’s why The Well boasts some extraordinary installations, including the second largest snow melt system in Canada next to Pearson International Airport, a LEED-certified stormwater system, and an innovative #Enwave system for sustainable heating and cooling.
Congratulations to The Well’s entire team for not only this monumental achievement but making a lasting impact on Canadian Real Estate! Watch⬆️ for behind-the-scenes footage of The Well and the Modern Niagara team’s work.

In the pipe trades, it's all about making things happen…and Lea Jacobson (@miss_welder), a dedicated welder from #UALocal628 in Thunder Bay, is a shining example of this ethos.
Lea is hard at work at the Greenstone Gold Mine Power Plant, where she's putting the finishing touches on her final welds before turning all the engines over and finalizing the commissioning process. This is one of the most critical phases where all the systems, engines, and equipment are brought to life and tested to ensure they're working seamlessly. Lea is ensuring that everything runs smoothly, like a maestro conducting an orchestra 🎼
Lea's dedication and skill are a testament to the incredible talent within the #UA community, showcasing the vital role that tradespeople play in powering our world.
Way to go, Lea! 👏🔥

Two generations of skill and dedication 💪🔧
Meet Alex and Jake, a dynamic father-son duo from #LekterIndustrialServices in Windsor, making waves in the world of plumbing.
With 21 years of experience under his belt, Alex’s journey into the trade was serendipitous when he applied for an apprenticeship at #UALocal527, and he’s been loving every moment of it since. His favourite part of the job is the good people he gets to work with (including his son Jake).
For Jake, the path into plumbing was paved with inspiration from his dad and grandpa – although he didn’t need convincing at all. With a stint at university, he quickly realized that a desk job wasn’t his calling. Drawn to staying active, hands-on work and the joy of meeting new people, he applied for an apprenticeship.
With Jake as a good worker and Alex as a skilled teacher, they’ve become a powerhouse team. Sure, there are moments of tough love, but that’s all part of the journeyperson experience😏.
