During Black History Month, we honour the history, culture, and invaluable contributions of Black Canadians who've shaped our nation’s identity✊🏽.
In the trades, we pay homage to the extraordinary Black trade unionist trailblazers who paved the way for positive change in our industry: from Bromley Armstrong who fought for the development of anti-racist legislation in Ontario, to Stanley G. Grizzle who fought for the rights of Black Canadians as the first Black Citizen Court judge, to Fred Upshaw who was the first Black leader of a major Canadian trade union and won wage increases and human rights language in contracts...to our very own Roodney Clarke, UA Local 46’s first Black president and business representative🛠️. The list goes on.
As we reflect on the past, we understand the challenges the industry still faces in the present. In the unionized pipe trades, we stand united and are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where every tradesperson can thrive. We ask our locals across Ontario to recognize and celebrate Black members' incredible contributions to the pipe trades, not just in February, but each day of the year.
Not your typical “toilet”, eh?
We want to break one common misconception right now. When you work in the Ontario Pipe Trades you may never see a plunger – you’re working on complex mechanical systems for large-scale and high-priority projects, making a direct impact on how your communities run.

In Windsor, the #Vollmer crew is instrumental in breathing life into this monumental project, skillfully installing mechanical systems throughout the Canadian Port of Entry. From customs and administration to operations, inspections, and tolls – their pipe trades experts have every detail covered, ensuring seamless integration of plumbing, drainage, hydronic, heating and cooling, natural gas, storm, ventilation, and compressed air systems.
But it’s not just about scale, it’s about a commitment to sustainability. Every building is LEED Silver certified, courtesy of the energy-efficient systems installed and a focus on hydronic piping for efficient energy transport.

The pipe tradespeople of #AVilleneuveMechanicalLtd are taking history into the future🚧!
The team is breathing new life into the iconic Canada Games Complex in Thunder Bay. Over 40 years strong, this facility is getting a major upgrade to its heating, boiler, and mechanical systems. This is no small task, as all these components are connected through an intricate piping system to heat the entire complex - including the facility’s 77-metre athletic pool🏊♂️!
The pipe tradespeople aren’t just replacing - they are revolutionizing - incorporating energy-efficient systems and new technology to ensure this community staple runs in the best way possible.
When completed, this state-of-the-art facility will welcome back community members to a top-notch space for staying active and thriving🏋️♀️🏃💪 🏓.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge project isn't just about crossing borders 🇨🇦 🇺🇸, it's about improving the community, creating jobs, and setting new standards in environmental sustainability🌿. That’s why the project earned this year’s inaugural National Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Award from the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships for its outstanding commitment to sustainability and community prosperity in the Windsor-Detroit region.
The #Vollmer team in Windsor is vital in bringing this monumental project to life, intricately installing the mechanical systems for all the buildings at the Canadian Port of Entry. From customs and administration to operations, inspections, and tolls – their pipe tradespeople have every corner covered, ensuring the plumbing, drainage, hydronic, heating and cooling, natural gas, storm, ventilation, and compressed air systems are seamlessly integrated. These systems serve everything from the animal inspection area🐄 to the x-ray inspection building🚚. The Vollmer team even took seismic grading into account, ensuring all mechanical systems are prepared for any eventuality.
But what truly sets this project apart? It's not just the scale, it's the commitment to sustainability. Each building is LEED Silver certified, thanks to energy-efficient systems and a focus on hydronic piping for efficient energy transport. The project’s energy centre utilizes energy-efficient boilers and chillers, forming a campus-wide heating and cooling system that connects all buildings via an underground hydronic piping network.
Congrats Vollmer! Here's to building not just a Port of Entry, but a sustainable future. 🤝
Meet Ian, the skilled hand of UA Local 527! 🛠️
Joining in late 2010, he earned his stripes through a steamfitter apprenticeship, securing his welding red seal. Beyond mastering the art of welding in nuclear facilities, refineries, and breweries, Ian's heart lies in the dynamic world of pipelines.

Meet Dave, the skilled plumber originally from Galloway, Ireland 🇮🇪! Straight out of high school, Dave embarked on a plumbing journey that led him to the Ontario Pipe Trades in Canada.
After six years in the non-union world, he was eager to switch to the benefits of union life – as a member of @ua_local46 he enjoys a four-day work week (something not offered in all locals), a robust pension, better pay, and the chance to dive into more complex, rewarding projects. Dave was a key part of the @modern.niagara team who helped bring The Well to life (… go check out our previous posts to see how monumental that project is 😏)!
What’s his favourite part of the job? The easy-going, hands-on work, freedom to explore, and ability to learn with an amazing team.
@thewell_to is ready for whatever winter throws its way❄️
Say goodbye to scary slips and dirty slush - the pipe tradespeople of @modern.niagara installed the largest snow melt system in Canada (second only to Toronto Pearson Airport), ensuring every path is clear from ice and snow.
This not only eliminates the need to use environmentally harmful salt around this 8-acre community, but also reduces work for the businesses located within by preventing snow and salt from being dragged around.
And that’s just the beginning. The Modern Niagara team also intricately crafted the Well’s mesmerizing glass canopy with electric heating and 60 rainwater lines to ensure nothing ever obstructs this architectural gem.
So, the next time you take a winter stroll through this stunning mixed-use development… give a silent props 🤜 🤛 to the pipe tradespeople from @ua_local46 who helped make it so enjoyable!

This passion led him to establish Lekter in '88, and since then, he's transformed it from a small venture to a hundred-strong team working on major ICI projects throughout the region🏗️.
A proud union member from day one, Dave's commitment to excellence led him to unionize his business as well, allowing access to a highly skilled workforce a phone call away👷♂️.
For Dave, every day is a new challenge, and he thrives on turning the impossible into reality with his team. Beyond his business success, Dave's decades of industry service (including his presidency at the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada) culminated in a well-deserved lifetime achievement award this past fall.

Meet Alex and Jake, a dynamic father-son duo from #LekterIndustrialServices in Windsor, making waves in the world of plumbing.
With 21 years of experience under his belt, Alex’s journey into the trade was serendipitous when he applied for an apprenticeship at #UALocal527, and he’s been loving every moment of it since. His favourite part of the job is the good people he gets to work with (including his son Jake).
For Jake, the path into plumbing was paved with inspiration from his dad and grandpa – although he didn’t need convincing at all. With a stint at university, he quickly realized that a desk job wasn’t his calling. Drawn to staying active, hands-on work and the joy of meeting new people, he applied for an apprenticeship.
With Jake as a good worker and Alex as a skilled teacher, they’ve become a powerhouse team. Sure, there are moments of tough love, but that’s all part of the journeyperson experience😏.

Meet Brian Fang, the skilled journeyperson from @ua_local46, hard at work on the Enwave deep water-cooling plant project! 💧🏗️ Here, he's crafting a 24" bypass on a 36" water line – a fascinating feat of engineering.
To break it down: A '24" bypass' refers to a separate pipeline, 24 inches in diameter, that's being connected to the existing '36" water line,' which is a larger, 36-inch diameter pipeline.
This clever design allows for flexibility and control in the flow of water, making sure the cooling system operates efficiently. 💯

Meet Camron: From Jamaica to Ontario, he's chasing his plumbing dreams🇯🇲➡️🇨🇦
Camron’s journey from Jamaica to Canada in 2003 brought him closer to his lifelong passion - the world of trades. Inspired by his family's trade background, he knew this was his calling from a young age💪 Although he started in electrical, plumbing was ultimately his craft.
As a first-year apprentice at # BGibsonMechanical, Camron thrives while working alongside his team and soaking up knowledge on-site (currently at Magnus Theatre). On top of that, being part of #UALocal628 is like having a constant support network – if he has any questions, he’ll always get answers🤝
When he's not mastering his skills, Camron enjoys the beauty of Thunder Bay, whether it's boating, hitting the bars with friends, or casting a line and going fishing🚤🍻🎣
There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned makeover…
@magnustheatre – one of Thunder Bay’s oldest buildings - has stood the test of time, and thanks to B. Gibson Mechanical its legacy continues to evolve🌟
The B. Gibson Mechanical team are breathing new life into this historic treasure built in the 1880s, bidding farewell to old boilers and installing modern heating, cooling, plumbing, and hot water systems.
Working on a heritage preservation project is no small feat. These skilled pipe tradespeople have to preserve the theatre's rich history by ensuring no exterior changes and no holes are drilled, while also expanding the space to make room for future arts programs.
You might not think about it, but this is the type of work that helps communities thrive and keeps the arts alive!
Can you guess the latest project #BGibsonMechanical has been working on?
Get ready for the transformation of a historic treasure🎭 This Northwestern Ontario staple is one of the oldest buildings in Thunder Bay, and the skilled pipe tradespeople of #UALocal628 are helping write its next chapter...

Meet the powerhouse of Northwestern Ontario's industrial scene! 💪🔧
Proudly part of the Ontario Pipe Trades family, they're the go-to contractor for fabrication and mechanical services across Canada.🍁 From forestry to power generation, their expertise knows no bounds.
But what truly sets them apart? Their incredible team of pipe tradespeople from UA Local 628 in Thunder Bay. As President John Jurcik rightly puts it, 'The strength of the company comes from our people.' 🙌
In Sarnia, safety isn't just another checkbox ✔️
Here in the heart of Chemical Valley, the IEC Training Centre stands as the place where contractors, unions, and companies unite in a "tripartite" alliance to collectively champion safety.🤝 This unity has paved the way for Sarnia Lambton's remarkable safety record (!!!)
💨 IEC delivers comprehensive respirator training, benefiting not only the pipe trades but an array of industries in the region. A vital safety measure, especially when working with chemicals. You’ll always feel well-equipped on the job!
👨🔬There’s a whole fit test room where you learn the art of donning masks tailored to your needs. The fit of your mask is crucial, take a watch and see how we do it! And if that’s not enough, the IEC employs cutting-edge tech (like Portacounts) to finesse mask fit. Complex equations and particle wizardry ensure a hermetic seal.
🔄 Certify, then recertify… it's an ongoing commitment. Every three years, pros revisit for H2S gas handling recertification. And every two years, masks are tailor-fitted anew, ensuring top-quality protection!
Here, safety isn't just taught…it's mastered. 👏

Meet Jarrod, a skilled pipe welder in Sarnia👋
From a young age, Jarrod was drawn to hands-on work, and it was a childhood dream of pipeline welding that ignited his passion for the craft. He saw it on TV, and knew he had to pursue it!
Jarrod’s journey began in a non-union shop for 9 years, but he found a unique sense of belonging when he joined #UALocal663. He loves being part of the union because there is a family aspect to it, a brotherhood and a sisterhood.
To all the young, aspiring welders out there, Jarrod has some sage advice: "Go out, make a hand, and be someone." With determination, a supportive community, and a passion for what you do, you can turn any dream into reality.
James (@jboxall1234) is a journeyperson pipe welder from @ua_local46, helping preserve Ontario’s history one weld at a time 🔥
James is shown working on the monumental Macdonald Block Reconstruction Project🏗️🏛️ At a sprawling 1.7 million square feet, this 1970’s administrative hub is undergoing a remarkable transformation by updating all core building systems. It’s a delicate dance of preserving the building's rich heritage while integrating state-of-the-art technologies.
In this shot, James is in action on the Ferguson Tower, crafting the 24" condenser lines that connect the cooling tower to the chillers. The tunnel behind him leads to risers that stretch 16 stories high, where the cooling tower reigns supreme.
This is #realtalk👷♀️
There’s not just one path you can take - there are THREE equal options after high school: university, college, OR the apprenticeship pathway in the trades.
Let’s shatter stereotypes and empower the next generation with choices🔥

It shouldn't matter who's behind a welding mask or a wrench, a person's work should speak for itself👏
Today is #InternationalEqualPayDay! Started by the @unitednations, it highlights the ongoing commitment to achieve gender equality and empower women everywhere.
While female building trades workers have been paid equally since the 1970s, there is a lot of work to be done around the globe🌎
For us, it shouldn’t just stop at equal pay for equal work. There are a number of initiatives for female UA members to ensure they succeed including a parental wellness program, benefits for pregnant women working in the field and a top-up for maternity leave.
Let's keep striving for a society where talent, dedication, and skills are valued above all else.

The skilled pipe tradespeople @modern.niagara played a crucial role in bringing @TheWell_To to life… including its sustainable #Enwave powered system!
Enwave is a fully integrated district energy services provider who enables low-carbon energy solutions to create a positive impact in our communities. The Modern Niagara team had to dig deep in partnership with Enwave to expand Enwave’s existing network from Toronto’s core to serve not only The Well - but also cater to future projects in the west-end, potentially reaching 17 buildings!
At the hub of The Well’s Enwave system is its impressive chiller room. Taking a year to complete, a team of 8 skilled pipe fitters worked tirelessly to uniquely configure the routing of up to 20-inch pipes and two 1200-ton chillers. Underground piping connects the room directly to a 7.6 million-litre water reservoir, located all the way down under parking level 7. YES, there is an actual well below “The Well”!
This fully automated system is like no other in the city of Toronto, truly setting a new standard for sustainable infrastructure! The Well is an example of the important role the construction industry plays in a greener future.🌿🌏

With #LabourDay this past weekend, we want to take a trip down memory lane and share its rich history📖 While some may think it is just a well-earned day off, its true purpose is to honour the accomplishments of the labour movement and the importance of unionized work.
The first Monday in September has been an official holiday in Canada since 1894, but the origin of Labour Day actually occurred 20 years before that, rooted in the struggles of working people. These roots trace back to 1872, when unions in #Ontario organized parades and rallies to celebrate the successful 1872 Toronto printers' strike. This original "fight for fairness" led to significant labour reforms, including the decriminalization of unions in Canada!
We want to properly honour the legacy of those who stood up for workers' rights and paved the way for progress. We are #unionstrong in the Ontario Pipe Trades and proud of all the #UAs and contractors that make up our amazing community👏
Wondering what you’re doing this #LabourDay? The members of #UALocal628 in Thunder Bay aren’t.
Joining UA Local 628 is your ticket to making a mark in the booming pipe trades scene in the region – but also to a nature-lover’s paradise where every day feels like a long weekend. From hiking through mountain trails to casting a line into the sparkling waters, this is where nature’s beauty meets the thrill of the pipe trades. Let’s just say UA Local 628 members don’t have your typical after-work activities🎣⛵🥾🏞️

Working in perfect harmony, @modern.niagara ‘s mechanical and controls teams joined forces to make West Park Hospital a marvel of efficiency🏥
The mechanical teams, including its pipe tradespeople, installed intricate equipment and mechanical systems, while the controls team supports their everyday operation utilizing the building automation system (BAS). Think of BAS as the brain of the building, making sure every piece of equipment, every valve, every flow rate is optimized for peak performance💧 From energy-efficient boiler systems to seamless heating and cooling, it’s an ongoing collaboration to ensure this hospital runs smoothly!
In the heart of precision, @weldexpress and @weissfitter work hand-in-hand to orchestrate mastery. These welds sculpt a tie-in socket on a Rolls Royce jet engine generator fuel supply at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, propelling dreams skyward🛫
It’s fascinating to see how welders and fitters work together so seamlessly! The welder is responsible for fusing parts into a seamless whole. Meanwhile, the fitter meticulously assembles the puzzle, ensuring every piece finds its rightful place.
We’re proud to represent the skilled pipe tradespeople of #UALocal628 in Thunder Bay, who are powering a wave of incredible ICI (institutional, commercial, industrial) projects within the region! Our members are exposed to a variety of work, including in the mining, forestry and pulp/paper industries, to name a few ⚒️🌲📄 The best part? Being a UA member allows you to travel and work throughout Ontario and beyond.
When it comes to this high-demand talent, it's all about the training👨🏭 UA Local 628's Training Centre is the secret behind their top-notch expertise. A true pipe trades dynamo, Chelsea Fraser’s journey is a testament to perseverance and the boundless opportunities within our community. A decade within the union, nine years at Anderson Webb, and a trailblazer at heart, Chelsea has achieved a lot.
She dove into her pipe trades adventure with gusto, immersing herself in every facet of the shop in her first year, elbowing her way in to seize her spot. From journeyperson to shop management to quality control, Chelsea’s evolution is nothing short of inspiring. Her current role involves meticulously inspecting and ensuring the precision of every part – a job she’s taken on with pride and finesse.
Reflecting on her story, Chelsea emphasizes that every day at work feels like a new role, a fresh challenge to conquer. And conquer she does, all while balancing the joys of being a mother to one-year-old twins and indulging her love for wood burning art.
Chelsea’s advice to those looking at this career? Don’t be daunted – you’re more capable than you realize, both physically and mentally. You don’t need to bench press 200 pounds, there’s a plethora of paths you can take within the union which matches your specific skills and interests. There’s always something new to learn, and another way to advance.
The key, she believes, is to keep trying until you find what truly resonates with you.

First up: A breakdown of the earnings you’d make as a journeyperson plumber in Ottawa’s ICI industry, after finishing your apprenticeship. The @modern.niagara team is keeping @westparkhealthcarecentre warm and green 🏥 🔥 Their piping pros and genius controls crew brought to life a heating powerhouse that’s all about innovation and efficiency.
Imagine a massive room solely dedicated to heating water – that’s West Park Hospital’s boiler room for you! But it’s not just any old boiler setup, we’re talking about a whole row of boilers that uses a fully automated rotation sequence to create an energy efficient system🔄
Let’s break it down: At West Park, the building’s brain - aka the BAS (building automation system) - ensures every major mechanical system dances in harmony. For the boiler system, it’s all about taking turns in the spotlight. Each week, a new boiler gets to be the “lead,” while the others form a solid support chain. It’s like a well-choreographed dance that keeps the heat flowing without a hitch, making sure the boilers stay strong for the long haul.
Riello burners and boilers take centre stage in this energy-saving performance. They’re designed to burn efficiently, minimizing wastage, and reducing costs – that’s a win for the hospital’s budget and the planet🌍. Plus, these champs are sustainably designed, reducing emissions and leaving a smaller environmental footprint in this 24/7 process🌿🌬️
We’re proud of this incredible collaboration from Modern Niagara, supporting not just Ontario’s healthcare system but the planet!

From @ualocal_46, meet Gary 'the animal', Scotty Kaiser, and @welderchick3030 – the 'A' Team helping rewrite (and improve) Ontario’s piping history.
Armed with 8018 - a low-hydrogen electrode - they fuse strength with precision, replacing 1.3km of pipeline from the 1970s. Every weld speaks a language of trust, where communication isn't just key, it's the melody of progress.
Meet Nathan, the Chief Estimator at #ConestogoMechanical! Nathan is a prime example of the many career paths you can take in the Ontario Pipe Trades.
Starting his journey in 2001, Nathan initially attended university but found his true passion working with his hands while running a landscaping business. Encouraged by a friend, he applied to the pipe trades and started his plumbing apprenticeship.
After years of on-site experience as a plumber🔧, Nathan transitioned to his current leadership position as Chief Estimator, running the construction department. This role allowed him to combine his hands-on skills with critical thinking, utilizing his math background from university.
Coming from both sides of the same coin, Nathan understands the benefits of being both a unionized tradesperson and a unionized shop.
As a tradesperson, you get free top-tier training, competitive pay, great benefits, and work-life balance with a more scheduled 37-40 hour work week. And on the flip side, running a unionized business gives Nathan the advantage of tapping into a highly skilled pool of tradespeople, prepared for any type of job. Plus, the flexibility to scale his workforce according to project demands is a significant advantage!
At #WestParkHealthcareCentre, @modern.niagara helped pump life into the facility by installing its crucial medical gas system. This is the heart of the hospital, serving patients through 600 head walls and over 2000 outlets.
This mechanical system uses Zephyr pumps on the seventh floor to pump oxygen (stored 1,200 feet underground) throughout the entire hospital. These pumps are crucial, acting as a medical vacuum system that ensures the smooth flow of med gas to those in hospital beds💨
This type of work isn’t for the everyday plumber... a specialized license is required. Josh is the go-to guy on West Park’s site, with 16 years of experience under his belt! He received his med gas training for free from his local union – and now even teaches the course! While there are many different specialities you can earn, Josh enjoys med gas because it is challenging and separates him in the industry.

Say hi to Darren 👋, a welder from #UALocal527 working for #TrademarkIndustrial.
Darren started his welding journey in the non-union world in 1993, but made the switch to the union after a colleague inspired him. At the time, the decision wasn’t easy – he was faced with a lot of misconceptions and backlash – but it turned out to be the best decision he could make.
Joining the union led to better pay, job security, and boundless growth opportunities. From gas work to nuclear projects to maintenance, he's tackled it all. Each project poses unique challenges, weld procedures, and pipe materials – but Darren's passion for problem-solving keeps him going strong.
One thing he’s really appreciated is how safety is a top priority in the union. With state-of-the-art training facilities and free annual training, Darren is prepared for any job that comes his way. He never walks on a site without the knowledge he needs and has the right to refuse work if he doesn’t feel prepared.
Make sure to follow along to see what project Darren is currently working on👀… any guesses?

Let's take a moment to appreciate the unsung heroes of our industry— mentors! Mentorship and support are key to retaining tradespeople. They pass down invaluable knowledge and empower the next generation.
From instructors to foremen, to everyone in between, we’re grateful for the role mentors play each day in shaping the future of the Ontario pipe trades💙
Introducing Manny (@emmanuel_abenoza)! A Red Seal pipe welder and metal fabricator at #TrademarkIndustrial.
Growing up dreaming of being a pilot🛬, Manny unexpectedly found himself in a welding shop in 2014 and instantly fell in love with the craft💥.
Six years ago, he ditched the non-union scene when a colleague recognized his talent deserved more. Now, Manny thrives at #UALocal527 in Cambridge, soaking up better benefits, wages, and invaluable experience. As a journeyman welder, he continually pushes his skills to the limit, tackling bigger and more diverse projects all the time!
But the real perk for him? The union's unmatched flexibility so he has autonomy over his career. No more HR interviews or tedious notices if he wanted to make a switch… with a simple phone call he could seamlessly transition from one job to the next. Whether it's working at night or part-time, the union grants Manny the freedom to choose.
Swipe➡️ to check out Manny’s latest jaw-dropping project: A massive stainless steel pipe involving vapour chamber welding, where every weld has to be x-rayed for any defects or discontinuities that may not be visible to the naked eye.
Say hello to James 👋 a welding wizard from UA Local 71 in Ottawa ⚡ Whether it's in the pre-fab shop or on-site, James is a force to be reckoned with no matter the environment.
In the first photo, witness James' mastery as he flawlessly handles a 12" pre-fab. Lea Jacobson (@miss_welder) from #UALocal628 is back with some more weld adventures🤠🔥
Let’s just say, if you’re claustrophobic…this mightttt not be the job for you. But Lea can explain it in her own words:
“That photo was taken while I was welding a 6” stainless line that runs along the top of some leach tanks at Greenstone Gold mine.
I had a few butt joints set up there, so we set up hoarding to keep the wind and snow at bay.
Some of these joints were in really tight spots around the sides and bottom, with cable tray, scaffolding, and carbon lines in the way…which is why they chose their smallest welder (me) to get at them. 😆
I had a fitter in the tent with me doing fit up and working as my helper, and we had a great time knocking out these welds.”
The ultimate welding powerhouse! 🛠️✨
We asked John - the project supervisor at Trademark Industrial - what the key tools are in the fab shop, and he brought us over to the trusty Automatic Welding Machine.
Say goodbye to tedious stick welding and hello to seamless productivity – with no interruptions and precise welds, it’s a no-brainer why this tool is so useful.
No more interruptions & no compromises on weld quality! Let us know if you’re an automatic welding supporter too ⬇️ 🔥

Teamwork makes the dreamwork🤝💥 This particular job was a collab between the dynamic duo @brent.mason35 and @mrmiele from @ua_local46!
Here, Brent and Myles are cutting fish mouths for a 24 inch tie in - off of an 80 inch header - for the Enwave deep lake cooling pump station… or in simpler terms, if you aren’t a skilled tradesperson, they are installing a heat exchange system🔥

Meet Maaz, a 3rd year plumbing apprentice currently working at @westernuniversity💪🏽🐎
As the sole apprentice on site, Maaz handles a wide range of projects, from cutting pipes and soldering to assisting welders and fitters. He’s the go-to guy for any task a journeyman needs help with.
After switching to the union a year ago with #TrademarkIndustrial 💜, Maaz unlocked a whole new world: better pay, a pension plan, and a lot more experience. From the Safety Kleen plant to the Toyota factory, and even reaching as far as Ottawa, he’s been around the block.
But what really stood out for him? Free training that sets him up for success. Math, blueprint reading, welding, confined space training, you name it – it’s a full package deal that makes him a better plumber each day.
